Some heroic Jerrad Tyson goalkeeping was not enough to save Gold Coast as Wellington Phoenix defeated Gold Coast United 2-0 at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

The Phoenix had many chances in the first-half which started with Jerrad Tyson saving from Tim Brown’s long effort.

Only seconds later Tyson again made a great save to deny Andrew Durante’s flick-on-header even though the Hobart born goalkeeper probably didn’t see it.

Gold Coast’s first real chance came on 17 minutes when Golgol Mebrahtu’s driven effort thundered off the post.

Just before the half-hour mark Wellington took the lead when Leo Bertos’ free-kick was flicked onto the far post by Ben Sigmund for Durante to stab home.

The hosts should have extended that lead soon after but Tyson denied Bertos when Paul Ifill was unmarked in the centre, would have been an easy tap in for the Barbadian if Bertos passed.

Tyson continued to make great saves and this time denied Sigmund’s header.

Wellington were looking dangerous in the air and Brown headed a great Bertos cross just wide.

Durante could have scored his brace when his header was denied by Tyson once again.

In stoppage time Nick Ward doubled the lead to finish off Gold Coast United after a goal face scramble.

Wellington jump Perth into third with Gold Coast still cemented on foot of the table.
