Melbourne Victory interim Coach Jim Magilton believes that his squad needs some changes going into next season.

Speaking before his side’s last training sessions before flying to take on Sydney at Allianz Stadium (Sydney Football Stadium renamed) on Saturday night the Northern Irishman declared there is no doubt that changes need to be made.

“I think it (squad) needs changes, there is no doubt that it needs changes and there is no doubt it’s time now that we obviously have an opportunity to look at the roster and change one or two faces,” Magilton said.

But understands that players have been loyal to the club but considers there needs to be a natural turnover.

“There is a loyalty pleasure involved in every football club but there has to be natural turnover. It’s an opportunity now to maybe make those changes, maybe to freshen the place up, maybe to freshen the roster up but the people you bring in has to have the same sort of character that was initially at this football club which brought them so much success.”

The 42-year-old Northern Irishman also praised the behind the scenes work Kevin Muscat has done to help out the new gaffer but also believes he has been good on the pitch.

“He has been a great help for me. He has given me an insight into the Australian League, he has given me insight into a lot of the players, a lot of the agents, he has been very good in terms of setting up meetings with me and that and that has been largely behind the scenes. On the park he has been good,” Magilton said of Muscat

Magilton also declared that he does want the job permanently but does understand there will be plenty of interest.

“Yeah I do, I do want the job.

“I am sure there are a number of people out there who want this job which was the case when Mehmet (Durakovic) got it so I am sure that will be still the case and I am sure the board will sit down and discuss that.”

On the game itself the former Liverpool youngster recognizes the game will be tough.

“We respect their strengths and recognize they are going to be tough and we are ready and looking forward to the game. “

Magilton thinks his side this week just needs some more determination and focus against Sydney.

“More determination this week and go into the game prepared and ready and focused to get a result,” Magilton said of his requests of his side.
