A Karol Kisel penalty
was enough to defeat Melbourne Victory 1-0 at the newly named Allianz Stadium
and Sydney on Saturday night.
The defeat means Melbourne Victory are officially out of the
finals race whereas Sydney have two huge chances to make the finals with games
against Melbourne Heart and Newcastle Jets.
Melbourne Victory had the first two opportunities of the
game. First when Petar Franjic rose highest to a Marco Rojas corner but Ivan
Necevski saved well.
Seconds later Archie Thompson was played in and shot but the
charging Necevski smothered the effort.
A couple minutes later Nick Carle was found on the edge of
the box but the Victory defence did well to block.
On 18 minutes Joel Chianese should have opened the scoring
but Ante Covic saved as the 36-year-old closed the young attacker down.
Soon later Covic denied Chianese again as the 22-year-old
directed his effort into the arms of the former Socceroos ‘keeper.
Karol Kisel in his 50th Sydney appearance was
played in next but once again Covic closed down the Czechoslovakian to keep the
game scoreless.
On 26 minutes Sydney should have opened the scoring but
Kisel’s effort was cleared off the line fantastically by former Sydney player Mark
Milligan.
On 32 minutes Sydney had a huge chance to score from the penalty
spot after Ubay Luzardo pulled down Bruno Cazarine in the box. Kisel stepped up
and convincingly finished into the top corner.
Five minutes after scoring Kisel was in the action again as
Brett Emerton put in a ball across the face of goal but the onrushing Kisel
fired over.
Just before the break the ball fell for Rojas who picked out
Thompson who fired his header well over.
Sydney went into the break with the one goal lead but Sydney
should have taken advantage of a very shaky Melbourne Victory defence.
Early into the second-half Chianese could have scored his
third and hat-trick but miss-kicked Kisel’s cross after Terry McFlynn’s great
through ball.
Milligan next denied Carle on the goal line again after the
Socceroo took his chances from the edge of the box.
Cazarine like always was dangerous in the air but his fine
header on 66 minutes was comfortably saved by Covic.
Seconds later Cazarine rose highest again but this time the
Brazilian’s header looped over the crossbar.
Rojas, who was probably Victory’s best, next cut in from the
left and drilled his effort towards goal but the New Zealander’s attempt missed
agonisingly wide.
Victory were looking for an equaliser when Rojas’ corner was
headed back towards goal by Franjic but Harry Kewell headed his follow-up
attempt over.
With ten minutes left Matthew Foschini and Franjic denied
Kisel and Terry Antonis with two fine blocks to keep the deficit to one.
With the game ticking away second-half substitute Mark
Bridge was played in and got a toe onto the ball but Covic yet again did well
to smother the opportunity.
Emerton in the last minute of stoppage time was looking for
a second with a curling free-kick but Covic turned it around the post to save
well.
