Melbourne Victory have defeated Central Coast
Mariners 2-1 at AAMI Park on Friday night to register Jim Magilton's first win in charge.
Jim Magilton made three changes after the nil-all
draw in the Melbourne Derby. New Spanish signing Ubay Luzardo came in for his
debut, Jimmy Jeggo makes his first start in the A-League and Carlos Hernandez
also comes in. Jean-Carlos Solorzano, the suspended Grant Brebner and Leigh
Broxham all made way. Pedj Bojic, Bernie Ibini, Adriano Pellegrino and Troy
Hearfield all make way for the visitors with Tomas Rogic, Trent Sainsbury, Adam
Kwasnik and John Hutchinson all came in.
Central Coast had the first chance of the game on 4 minutes when Patrick Zwaanswijk rose up at a corner but his header wasn’t directed in by Adam Kwasnik at the far post.
Victory went right up the other end and Harry Kewell crossed brilliantly for Hernandez but the Costa Rican fired over from a couple yards out. However the referee ruled it to be offside.
Soon later youngster Tomas Rogic opened the scoring to score his first A-League goal. The 18-year-old beat new signing Ubay Luzardo before Adrian Leijer and Petar Franjic failed to close him down so the young forward shot from distance and beat Ante Covic from distance.
On 16 minutes Victory equalised. Marco Rojas cut the ball back from the right before Hernandez shot a powerful drive from the edge of the box which thundered off the inside of the post.
Midway through the half Rogic was causing havoc for the Leijer and Franjic but his effort from distance was skied well over.
Soon after Leijer and Franjic backed off from Rogic and the youngster’s attempted chip went agonisingly wide.
Just before half-time Hernandez could have had his brace but his effort was well saved by the feet of Justin Pasfield.
Mariners’ continued to threat at the set pieces with Daniel McBreen who rose up at another Mariners’ corner but his header bounced into the ground over Covic.
Early into the second-half Victory through Kewell took the lead. The ball was headed back into the box by Jeggo after a clearance and Kewell on the volley finished brilliantly with his left-foot.
On 55 minutes Kwasnik missed a great chance for the visitors. The ball was cleared up the middle and as Leijer missed the header Kwasnik on the volley unlike Kewell butchered the effort.
Victory went right up the other end as Hernandez played in Archie Thompson. The Socceroos forward audaciously lobbed Pasfield but the great effort wasn’t on target.
Michael McGlinchey’s corner next caused more problems for the Victory defenders as Jeggo failed to clear but Sainsbury’s header was put just over onto the top of Covic’s net.
Two minutes later Central Coast were down to ten as Trent Sainsbury was given a straight red card for a challenge on Fabio. The young defender’s tackle was reckless and studs were shown in the challenge on the Brazilian.
With about 10 minutes left of normal time Kwasnik received the ball in the box before Jeggo made a last ditch saving tackle. But Kwasnik was clever enough to pick the ball up with both feet while on the ground and flicked it over his own head but Covic was there to save.
Victory on another fast counter with substitute Danny Allsopp this time powered over from the edge of the box.
Two minutes later Jeggo was found all on his own at the back stick but curled his effort wide as the youngster looked for his first A-League goal.
Victory with their fast counter continued to look for another to finish off the visitors and Allsopp this time cut in from the left before shooting powerfully at Pasfield.
Two minutes later Pasfield was in the action again and denied Thompson’s curling effort with a great save to keep the deficit to one.
With a couple minutes left Hutchinson tried an ambitious effort but his volley on the right was skied into the stands.
On the brink of stoppage time Allsopp powered through young substitute Sam Gallagher before trying his chances but his effort was hit straight at Pasfield before Kewell fired the follow up well over.
But Victory were able to hang onto their first win in six games and the first win of the Jim Magilton regime.
Melbourne Victory coach Jim Magilton hopes that his side now will have the confidence to go on with a run. “We have got in our team, I hope a belief flowing through it, a confidence flowing through it and we are pretty much still a work in progress but training has been lively this week, there was a good feeling. We talked about the positives from last week and credit goes to the players, they built on that and we made a lot of the right decisions and I think that is through consistent messages in training.”
Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold despite the lost was happy with his side’s performance. “It was a great game of Football, it was a great spectacle. Melbourne Victory played fantastic and I was very, very happy with how we played, that is the best we have played in a while and I thought it was a great game of Football, was very entertaining and there were chances and great goals scored.”
